It is difficult enough to say wherefrom the surname VENTURA comes

What is true is that it does not come from a place, as many Spanish surnames.

  • The first hypothesis is that the surname VENTURA is an apocope of the name of "Buenaventura". The surname VENTURA is very common in Italy, where it can have the form Venturin, Venturini... In Italy, in 1299, There were an important VENTURA family in Salerno's city (South of Italy). Later, this family moved to Bari (South-east of Italy) where it’s members had responsibilities in the city. They were also members of the Order of Malta in 1587. There were also a Roberto VENTURA, baron of Casanova, who was a Foreign Minister of Carlos I. In the ecclesiastic records, we find the birth of a Guiseppe VENTURA in Venice in 1565, the baptism of a Grazia VENTURA in Saint Nicholas of Strada of Caserta's parish in 1637 or of a Giovanni VENTURA in the St Lawrence of Genoa.

  •  Another hypothesis is that the surname VENTURA is of Spanish origin. This way, we find in the ecclesiastic records, the baptism of a VENTURA in the parish San Gil and Holy Ana of Granada on December 07, 1550, but also the Eufracia VENTURA’S marriage on August 07, 1586 in Azagra (Navarre), the Gabriela VENTURA’S baptism on May 03, 1595 in the parish San Pedro of Abrera of Barcelona or Angela VENTURA’S marriage in Holy Maria Falces of Navarre on November 15, 1645.

  • According to the author of the Spanish-American Dictionary of Heraldry, onomastics and genealogy (Don Endika de Mogrobejo), the surname VENTURA  is of Aragonese origin. Ancient lineage of the Aragonese VENTURA  were situated in Ejea of the Gentlemen, Teruel, Done (Huesca) and other Aragon's villages.

  • An other hypothesis is that the name VENTURA has a Jewish origin (this hypothesis not this sole right of others) .In this way, we find the surname VENTURA in many countries of the Mediterranean area and of Central Europe. In this case, it could come from the name “Ben Torah” (son of the Law). It may also designate a hard-working person. It is said that the VENTURA were counselors of the king Ferdinand in Toledo and that they changed their name before the edict of 1492.

  • The surname VENTURA is mentioned in the Real Chancillería of Valladolid (in which there remain the processes of nobility of the Kingdom of Castile, correspondents to the populations living in the north of the river Tagus in the years between 1488 and 1834). It is also mentioned in the Real Chancillería of Granada (populations living in  the south of the river Tagus) and in the Real Audiencia of Aragon (index of the Processes of Nobility preserved in the historical file of the Royal Audience of Aragon).
